Mark Trombino is a record producer known for working with bands such as Blink 182, Mineral, Finch and The Starting Line, but most notably, to me at least, Mark produced almost all of Jimmy Eat World's albums including the landmark record Clarity.

Hope you enjoy this chat with Kevin, who was nice enough to have me over on a Saturday morning to talk about how he weighs business, money, punk lifestyle, and family. Kevin is a very wise, successful, and grounded guy who I am happy to have the opportunity to learn from directly.

What happens financially when a band breaks up? Can home studio recordings compete with the professional studios? How do you get started investing your money? What is the deal with ketogenic diets?

I am very happy to get out 2 episodes this week! Glad to be back.

I'm back! You can consider this episode one of season three of this podcast.  I'll explain it in the episode. Devin Shelton is with me to discuss how he arranges songs, particularly the set of cover songs he has done to promote the crowd fund for his new solo album. Also I have the pleasure of speaking with Tyson Motsenbocker and bringing you some clips from his yet to be released album that i really dig and discuss string arranging and key changes.

Matt Pryor is the singer of The Get Up Kids and a big inspiration to me. He has a podcast called Nothing to Write Home About.  We discuss touring with Weezer, why sometimes he would rather be a farmhand than a musician, and a little bit about anxiety and depression.

Pete Holmes hangs out with Matt (and Toby) to talk about stuff like comedians’ concerns, or lack thereof, about being PC, how musicians can kind of be compared to comedians and he lends a little insight on the industry for people looking to get into the comedy game.

For this episode, Dave Bazan (formerly of Pedro the Lion) stopped by and we talked about stuff like his avoidance of institutionalized and conformative ways of thinking, the concept of bringing character acting into the vocals for a song, his thought process when writing lyrics, and of course we break down the musical theory behind a handful of Pedro the Lion songs.

Cody is what you might consider a volitile genius.  He has broken up his band and reformed it, left his faith and returned, become a welder, a funiture maker, been divorced, self medicated , written profound music and then stopped creating for years at a time. I want to break down how all that works.

Go Wrong Young Man

This is one fun tune.  Built off of a a 2 measure guitar loop, this track uses alternate harmonizations and time signatures to make the different sections of the song be distinct. This one also has a rather experimental approach to vocal arranging and production, making this one of the weirdest emery songs ever.

To the Deep. If there was a song that we were gonna send or work to radio on this album, this would be it.  It’s catchy and has a big chorus that repeats, and has the classic verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus format.  BUT, we dont give a shit about radio and didn’t make this song that way on purpose, it just turned out that way.  It is Dave, our drummer’s favorite song, has no screaming, and is track seven on our new album, You Were Never Alone.
